Carly Rae Jepsen is Not a One Hit Wonder

Over seven years ago Carly Rae Jepsen invaded our eardrums with her irresistible smash hit “Call me maybe.” Back then a lot of people were labelling her a one hit wonder and assumed that we would never hear from her again after the fame from that one catchy pop song faded away.

Personally, I never felt that was the case. I always thought that Carly Rae Jepsen had a certain appeal and music background that most one-hit wonders didn’t have.

Well, Carly Rae Jepsen is back and her new music sounds good… As I have stated in previous posts I am a serious lover of 80’s inspired music and luckily Carly’s new music seems to be heavily influenced by that classic sound from the 80’s.

Carly Rae Jepsen announced her return with a release called “Party for One.” The song was received really well. At the time of writing this, the video has been out for about four months and it already has 12 million views.

If that isn’t enough to convince you that Carly Rae Jepsen is no one hit wonder she has just released two new songs and they both good.

The songs are called “No Drug Like Me” and “Now That I Found You.”

Now, “No Drug Like Me” is not really the kind of music that I get into but I can appreciate it for its musical quality. It has a good sound and for those who are into that style of music, it may become one of their favourites. So I encourage you to take a listen for your self to decide if you like it.

My favourite of the two of Carly Rae Jepsen’s most recent releases is “Now That I Found You.” It’s the song that I think will make a really big impact and become one of the more notable singles from her most recent collection of music.

Take a listen to all three songs in the post and let us know if you like any of the songs and if you think Carly Rae Jepsen is a one hit wonder or if she has proven herself as a musician who can bang out more than one hit.

Rebecca Black – Anyway

Rebecca Black is back from a long hiatus and I have to admit her music sounds really good… To me at least. Before I go on I have to admit that I am a sucker for anything retro. Especially 80’s synth pop-inspired tracks.

I was super hesitant about clicking on the video when I saw the thumbnail for Rebecca Blacks new song “Anyway.” Even though I am not the kind of person to hate on an artists music. I couldn’t help but expect another mediocre pop song. Especially after being bombarded by the super meme that Friday was. But something told me that she had learned from that last song. Something told me that maybe the reason we hadn’t heard from her for so long was that she wanted to take time to step back from it all and make some really, really good music.

Luckily, I didn’t listen to the hater in me. Eventually, I pulled the trigger and clicked on her videos thumbnail. I think it was the right choice because although not everybody is going to love this song, it certainly shows some serious growth in her music. The song has a very 80’s feel. To her credit, the song sounds absolutely nothing like Friday or any of her previous music.

The funny thing is as of writing this post, Friday has accumulated more than 130 million views. Despite all the criticism that the song has gotten. The good thing for her is that if this song gets as many views as Friday does it will be for all the right reasons. No one will be making any roast filled memes about this music video. Well… Except for the trolls of course.

Why Damian Keyes Thinks Musicians Should Stop Selling Music

Spoiler Alert: He's Right

Damian Keyes has been getting a lot of hate about a recent video he made called “Stop Selling Your Music”. Yes, maybe he could have avoided a lot of that hate by choosing to title his video in a way that wasn’t as blunt. Maybe if he had made it clear that his video was really intended to help musicians who are struggling to make money from their music he wouldn’t have received so much hate.

Maybe if he had titled it something more along the lines of “The New Ways to Make Money as a Musician” or “Stop Relying on iTunes To Make Make Money as a Musician.” He wouldn’t have received death threats and so much hate regarding that particular video. On the other hand, if he had done that I am sure he would not have gotten as many views. I am sure I wouldn’t be writing this article if Damian Keyes hadn’t taken the ballsy approach that he did.

Forget about the ballsy titling choice Damian made for a moment. The important thing to take away from this video is that Damian makes some very good points all musicians looking to make money should seriously take into consideration.

There are so many good ways to make money as a musician that don’t include selling your music in the traditional sense. Musicians need to know that they can sell merchandise like T-shirts, or do more live shows, make music for commercials or Youtubers. Musicians can also consider streaming music on Spotify or making videos on Youtube. All of these options for making money are really good ways to create multiple streams of income which can mean the difference between working a day job and making a living as a working musician.

Watch the video above and let us know if you agree or disagree with Damian Keyes. Should musicians really stop selling their music?

What New Artists Can Learn From De La Soul Getting Robbed By Their Label

De La Soul are not only pioneers in the rap game, but they are also still currently making revolutionary music. They were signed to a label that helped define an era. The late 80’s and early 90’s hip hop label Tommy Boy was the record label De La Soul called home until the decision to go independent.

The drama that occurred during their time at the label is where we can look to learn from their experiences. What can be learned from De La Soul is how to stay focused. For more than 3 decades De La Soul stayed focused on creating original hip hop music. But believe it or not, De La Soul has not been paid for their first three hip hop defining albums due to some shady business practices by Tommy Boy which actually ended up going under.

Noting that like many artists, they had a love-hate relationship with their label. De La Soul went on to explain that their previous label Tommy Boy had stuck them with a 2 million dollar fee for not clearing samples. The truth of it is,  De La Soul was not responsible for clearing their samples. Sample clearing is actually something your label is supposed to take care of with their artists before the album is released. Furthermore, due to Tommy Boys label going under years ago and being sold to Warner Bros. De La Soul could not make a profit from digital sales. Mostly because Warner Bros did not see it as profitable to convert the masters to digital so that they could be licensed and streamed on platforms like Spotify or Youtube.

Well, now Tommy Boy has bought back their catalog which includes the music from De La Souls first three albums. And surprise surprise they are streaming the songs on Youtube and Spotify but De La Soul is still getting no royalties. But what is actually surprising is Tommy boy did not take it upon themselves to clear the same samples they are supposedly holding against De La Soul. Talk about some shady business practices.

Amid all this Jay Z has chosen not to stream any of their music from the Tommy Boy catalog until De La Soul is compensated properly.

The fact that a group that has had such a substantial impact on hip hop has been put into unfair debt from the very label they were signed to is kind of absurd.

The lesson that can be learned from this is to make sure that if you do decide to sign with a label that they have your best interests in mind.

Luckily the professional music atmosphere has changed and artists no longer need a label to get known or make money. So what musicians should focus more on making great music that will stand the test of time rather than just being focused on getting signed to a major label.

Hopefully, De La Soul will be cleared of all debts to their label and receive the compensation they deserve for their music. Until then we will just have to use this as another example of musicians getting the bad end of a record deal.

Here are a few other things from the Sway’s Universe interview which I think are worth pointing out.

De La Soul made all of their money from touring and live shows.

During their interview with the breakfast club they stated:

“There’s no need to complain… Just make music.”

They also stated that they are currently working on a new album with Pete Rock.

During the interview, they mentioned that they like Migos, Kodak Black, J Cole, Childish Gambino and Chance the Rapper.

They say they love the new music that is coming out.

And in the spirit of continuing to make money, De La Soul will also be going on the Gods of Rap tour.
